Our mission is to educate substance abuse awareness and prevention in the Block Island Community, and promote wellness.
It is important to distinguish between between Substance USE, and Substance ABUSE*. There is a lot of research evidence, for example about longer term negative effects on young people whose brains are still in process of developing (such as a higher probability of becoming alcoholic later). We work to keep updated, to share the information, and, above all, to promote activities that enable wellness.
We work with ideas from “Natural Highs” and “Above the Influence” and think of “Education” as lifelong, for all of us, as research and information.
We share what we have learned with Videos, What Drugs and Alcohol Do, Recovery and Hope, Links to other organizations and research (but we are not responsible for the content from other sites). Please contact us if you have a comment, experience to share, some information to add.
*Substance Use is defined as the consumption of low or infrequent doses of alcohol and other drugs, sometimes called experimental, casual or social use. Substance Abuse is defined as the use of alcohol or drugs despite negative consequences.
